Sanskrit Pronunciation (Uccārana) for Yoga Teachers & Students

A 2-hour workshop with Matthew Andrews

Recorded on May 13

Sanskrit is a phonetic language, meaning that there is a clear and simple set of pronunciation rules.

Modern teachers of yoga are representing Sanskrit traditions, and have a responsibility to do so with integrity. Learning Sanskrit's basic pronunciation rules is a first step in fulfilling this responsibility.

This workshop will cover basic rules of Sanskrit pronunciation with special focus on common words used in modern yoga classes - names of postures, mantras, etc. Absolute beginners welcome.

The word Sanskrit itself means something like "perfectly made", and it's an amazing system that connects the human voice and breath to the voice and breath of the cosmos. The Sanskrit language is written in Devanāgarī script, for which my poetic translation is "city of living stars".
